Kota: The Declining Education City

Kota, long celebrated as the gateway to academic success and a stepping stone to prestigious IITs and medical colleges, is witnessing a concerning shift in its reputation as India’s “Education City.” Once thriving with vibrant coaching institutes and teeming with the hustle and bustle of determined students, Kota’s atmosphere was electric with ambition and competition. However, the city now grapples with a significant decline, echoing the hardships it faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The allure that once drew aspiring doctors and engineers to its bustling streets has faded, leaving many to wonder about the future of this once-thriving educational hub.

Recent reports from NDTV indicate a staggering 40 to 50 percent decrease in student enrollments at Kota’s prestigious coaching institutes compared to previous years. This decline is not only affecting the educational landscape of the city but is also threatening the livelihoods of many who rely on student patronage.

Local businesses are feeling the pinch. An owner of a bakery in Kota’s Coral Park area lamented, ‘Sales have  halved due to fewer students. Many shops have had to shut down,’ highlighting the broader economic distress gripping the city.

For over three decades, Kota has thrived as an educational hotspot, transforming from a small town to a bustling city fueled by its coaching industry. However, this year presents a stark contrast, with many hostels sitting empty and businesses struggling to stay afloat.

Reasons For this Decline:

  • Rise of Edtech: The advent of online learning platforms like BYJU’S, Unacademy, and Physics Wallah has disrupted Kota’s monopoly. These platforms offer quality education, recorded lectures, and personalized learning, often at a fraction of the cost of moving to Kota. The convenience of learning from home has made edtech an attractive alternative.
  • Shift in Aspirations: The Indian student demographic is diversifying. More students are exploring career paths beyond engineering and medicine, reducing the demand for Kota’s coaching institutes. Courses in finance, data science, entrepreneurship, and liberal arts are gaining traction, reflecting a broader shift in aspirations.
  • Unrealistic Success Metrics: Kota’s coaching institutes often boast success stories, but the reality is starkly different. Only a small fraction of students achieve their goals, while many face burnout and academic stagnation. This growing awareness has led to skepticism about Kota’s effectiveness.
  • High Cost of Living: For families, the cost of sending a child to Kota has become prohibitive. Tuition fees, hostel rents, and additional expenses can amount to several lakhs per year. In comparison, online platforms are more affordable and accessible.

Kota’s story isn’t over; its educational legacy endures. The city is still home to some of India’s finest educators and institutions, but the time has come for a transformation. To once again shine as a beacon of learning, Kota must embrace change. By prioritizing a student-centric approach and integrating technological advancements, along with diversifying its offerings, the city can revitalize its educational landscape and inspire a new generation of scholars.

Kota’s story serves as a reminder that even the strongest educational systems must adapt to changing times and priorities. Whether it will regain its lost glory or fade into history depends on how it navigates these challenges.
