Pocket Money- Luxury or Necessity?

In today’s fast-paced world, money plays a vital role in shaping habits, attitudes, and even values. Among students, pocket money is often a topic of debate, whether it is a luxury, given out of comfort, or a necessity, to help students become responsible and independent?

To most students, pocket money may appear to be a small amount, given daily, weekly or monthly for small expenses like recharging data, buying snacks etc. However, it poses a bigger purpose for children: aiding them in cultivating responsible financial practices.

On one hand, it can be seen as a luxury as not all families can afford to hand extra cash to their kids. Some rich parents may give a large sum of money to their children without having to earn it. This can develop habits like over spending and a casual attitude towards money, hence leading to irresponsible handling of money in adulthood.

However, when it’s managed with purpose and limits, pocket money becomes a necessity. It equips them with essential life skills like learning how to budget, prioritize and make decisions. Hence, this lays the foundation for financial responsibility.

Many experts believe that pocket money should be linked with responsibilities like completing chores or getting good grades. This not only allows kids to learn financial planning, but encourages a sense of accountability. Students begin to understand that money needs to be earned and must be used wisely.

Moreover, when students are exposed to handling money, they gain financial literacy, a skill essential for life. They learn the importance of saving money, the dangers of overspending and even the basics of investments if guided well.

In conclusion, while pocket money can be misused if given without limits, it is far more than just a luxury. It’s an opportunity to prepare students for the real world. When used thoughtfully, it becomes a powerful learning tool that teaches discipline, responsibility and the value of money, lessons that no textbook can fully teach.

So the real question is not whether pocket money is a luxury or a necessity, but rather: Are we using it the right way?
